Catherine, 1890

$550.00

A late Victorian petticoat dating to approximately c. 1890, deaccessioned from a museum collection. Made from fine white cotton, the skirt is gathered into a narrow waistband and falls into a long, full silhouette with generous volume at the hem. The petticoat has a double-layered construction, with an inner and outer decorative layer giving the piece volume and a beautiful glide when walking. The lower third is beautifully worked with horizontal tucks, gathered flounces, and two wide bands of Cluny lace in scrolling floral motifs. Designed to give shape and fullness beneath the skirts of the period, it also wears beautifully today as a romantic antique cotton skirt.

Material: Cotton, broderie anglaise / embroidered lace
Colour: White
Era: Late Victorian, c. 1890

Measurements:
Waist: 28.7 in / 73 cm
Length: 44.1 in / 112 cm

Condition:
Very good antique condition. The petticoat has been carefully restored to its original whiteness and presents beautifully. Care:
Handle gently due to age and delicate cotton construction. Professional textile cleaning recommended, or very gentle cold hand washing if needed. Do not machine wash, tumble dry, or bleach.
